Ace investigative reporter Terry Greene Sterling (find her on Twitter!) joins me to discuss her compelling new book, Driving While Brown, Co-Authored with Jude Joffe-Block, plus all things Arizona and beyond. This was a deeply informative exchange on the complex issue of immigration, policing and so much more.

Terry Greene Sterling is affiliated faculty and writer-in-residence at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University and editor-at-large for the Arizona Center of Investigative Reporting. She has written one other book, Illegal. Her writing has been published in The Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Newsweek, The Atlantic, Slate, The Daily Beast, The Village Voice, High Country News, The Guardian, and many other publications. The Arizona Press Club has named her the state’s top journalist three times.

Driving While Brown documents all sides of Arizona’s relentless immigration crackdowns, which were championed by Sheriff Arpaio, who became the nation’s most notorious immigration enforcer. The authors interviewed the sheriff, victims of his policies, his loyal supporters, his tenacious opponents who stood up for their community and immigrants. The tense narrative follows Latino activists like Lydia Guzman, who worked tirelessly (and paid a steep personal price) to gather evidence in the landmark racial-profiling lawsuit brought against the sheriff. With a white majority losing demographic and political ground as the backdrop, the story of immigration in Maricopa County is the story of immigration in America. It’s a polarizing issue, easily manipulated by demagogues seeking power, and the lives of real people hang in the balance.
